Glasgow City councillors unanimously agreed to a motion which will see the South African flag fly over Glasgow City Chambers on Friday, June 11th to mark the start of the 2010 World Cup and to recognise the city’s history of solidarity and cooperation with the people of South Africa.
Bristol City Councillors have voted to fly three flags throughout the duration of the World Cup: The England flag in support of the national team, the South African flag, in solidarity with the people of South Africa and the Mozambican flag to mark the 20th anniversary of the city’s friendship and link with the city of Beira.
Haringey Council and Tottenham Hotspur FC are holding their own World Cup 6-a-side football tournament throughout the World Cup, leading to a ‘Big Final’ at the Albert Recreational ground on 11th July, the same day as the World Cup final. The borough’s football development plan will be launched and there will be entertainment.
The Arthur Wharton Foundation are holding a World Cup Jam Fever Party on 28 May at the Dickens Inn Golden Room in Middlesborough. The evening will include live music, DJs and competitions.
World Cup Diski Party
Just seven days before the World Cup kicks off, join a night of celebration and solidarity with Philosophy Football, ACTSA and others. A night of South African comedy, music, poetry and Diski dancing. from 7pm, 4 June, Camden Centre, London.
Hungerford Primary School and Islington Council
Bernard Bopape and Lyborn Rasimphi, teachers from Vhangani School, South Africa spent a week at the end of June teaching year five and six children in Hungerford Primary School in Islington as part of the twinning programme between the schools.
Hungerford Primary School has also been using ACTSA’s and NUT’s Freedom and Football educational pack to learn more about southern Africa. Mr Bopape, who is a Councillor for Makhado District in Limpopo Province, also addressed Islington’s full council meeting about local government and education in South Africa as well as the benefits of twinning.
