  • Swaziland: King Mswati III spends nearly £850,000 to send his wives on holiday

    By ACTSA | July 19, 2016

It has been reported that the King of Swaziland, Mswati III has spent nearly 16 million rand (approximately £850,000) sending his wives and entourage of more than 100 people on holiday to Florida, USA.

Swaziland has declared a state of emergency due to drought and appealed for international support. UNICEF estimates  at least 20% of the population, 350,000 need assistance. The sum reportedly spent by King is close to the amount it is receiving in humanitarian aid from the USA.

Objections were raised within Swaziland about the holiday but Mswati’s defence was that the vacation had been planned and paid for in advance, and that a cancellation would result in an unnecessary loss of money.

In the recently published report,‘Swaziland’s Downward Spiral,’ ACTSA calls on the international community to apply serious pressure on the Government of Swaziland so that it respects human rights and develops a genuinely democratic constitution.
