  • Constitution making process a mockery to the people of Zimbabwe

    By Info | July 8, 2010

Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions, Press release, Thr 8 July

The current farce of a constitution making process is bringing more questions than answers as it continues being characterised by chaos.

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions took a position of principle and dismissed the process as a mockery to the people of Zimbabwe. As events unfold it has become even clearer that political parties are in charge of the process. Ordinary Zimbabweans’ voices have been stifled as the political party positions take centre stage. Party supporters are being spoon fed what to say at the meetings while violence has also marred the process. Not much publicity has taken place hence very few people will be able to participate. 30 years on: What is life like for the women of Zimbabwe?

    By Info | May 21, 2010

In the 30 years since Zimbabwe gained independence much has changed within the country. From the early days of success when the country was referred to as the bread basket of Africa, Zimbabwe in recent years has slid into political and economic chaos, which the heavily criticised power-sharing agreement of 2008 between ZANU PF and the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) seeks to resolve. Life for Zimbabwean women has followed this rollercoaster of change and as the country struggles to overcome political and economic difficulties, women continue to bear the greatest burdens.

    ZCTU demands Presidential Elections

    By Info | May 21, 2010

Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions, Press release, 17 May 2010

The Zimbabwe Congress of TRade Unions (ZCTU) General Council on 15 May 2010 noted with concern lack of progress in the economic and political spheres since the inception of the Government of National Unity (GNU).

The GNU has been characterised by impasses, name calling and mistrust among the political parties while the majority of Zimbabweans continue to suffer. The envisaged new Constitutional making progress has been fraught with anomalies and as predicted by ZCTU, has failed to take off as a result of squabbling. While it would have been ideal to have a new people driven Constitution in place before elections, this is not currently possible. Read the rest of this entry »

    The voice of Zimbabwe’s workers

    By Info | April 29, 2010

By Rebecca Davis, ACTSA Member, April 2010

Lovemore Matombo looks tired. It’s not surprising: it’s 9am on Monday morning, at his hotel near Euston, and he’s had a gruelling few days already. These trips to London are important. As the President of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU), it’s his job to ensure that relationships are maintained with the powerful UK unions, NGO allies, and agenda-setters in Brussels.

The ZCTU has been a potent force in Zimbabwean politics for almost three decades. Formed in 1981, it provided increasingly vocal opposition to the regime of Robert Mugabe during the 1990s. It was the ZCTU which contributed the impetus behind the formation of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change: MDC head Morgan Tsvangirai is a former Secretary-General of the ZCTU. Zimbabwe: ZCTU leader discusses poverty levels

    By Info | April 28, 2010

Lovemore Matombo, President of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU), in an interview with Radio Labour, said that, despite a marked improvement in people’s lives following the signing of the Global Political Agreement (GPA), the disposal income of 99% of the workers still remained below the poverty level.

Malema twists the history of Zimbabwe

    By Info | April 16, 2010

By Terry Bell, Business Report, 16 April 2010

The late, great American author James Baldwin once wrote: “Ignorance allied with power is the most ferocious enemy justice can have.” Based on their experience, this is a sentiment with which many trade unionists in Zimbabwe heartily concur.

They also feel South Africans would do well to consider Baldwin’s assessment, especially following the recent verbal display of monumental ignorance by ANC Youth League (ANCYL) president Julius Malema in support of the regime in Zimbabwe. Read the rest of this entry »
