HIV/AIDS - Ease the burden on families with our ACTSA appeal
- One third of people living with HIV/AIDS are from southern Africa.
- Over one million people die in the region every year.
- The highest rate of infection is found in 15-29 year olds
We hear the facts. But no one hears the silent voices of those left behind.
With HIV and AIDS more likely to hit the breadwinners of the family, the burden of care often falls on the grandmothers to care for sufferers, orphans and vulnerable children in the household.
There is little support available to these women, traditionally looked after by those they now find in need. The impact of this disease ensures they will have no choice but continue to work to provide for those reliant on their support.
ACTSA is working in solidarity with a number of organisations such as Swaziland for Positive Living (SWAPOL), helping support the families of those affected, by demanding social grants for grandmothers.
ACTSA continues to campaign for universal access to prevention, care and treatment, and works with Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) to make anti-retroviral drugs freely available.
Please support our appeal and help us to continue to campaign against HIV/AIDS in southern Africa.
