World Cup 2010: Football and Freedom

This summer South Africa will host the FIFA World Cup, the largest international event on African soil ever.

ACTSA is using the opportunity of the World Cup to tell the story of southern Africa, the region's achievement since the end of apartheid and colonialism and the continuing challenges. We are also encouraging people to join in and help build solidarity with southern Africa through action, events and education.

There are lots of ways to get involved and we are working on a range of information in the run up to the World Cup, including:

  • World Cup Activities Pack
This pack contains ten simple things for communities, individuals and workplaces to do to promote southern Africa before and during the World Cup. Ranging from a sweepstake to celebrating Football Fridays the pack has all you need to make your World Cup celebrations a success. Download the Activities Pack.
  • World Cup Local Authorities Pack
This pack encourages local authorities to organise, promote and coordinate activities and events to celebrate World Cup 2010. It includes ideas to reaffirm solidarity, celebrate diversity and tackle racism in our society. Download the Local Authorities Pack.
  • Football and Freedom: a learning pack for schools. Created with the National Union of Teachers the pack is designed for teachers to use children’s interest in the World Cup to explore South Africa’s history, culture and context. Find out more about the football and freedom pack.
