In southern Africa, the effects of HIV/AIDS are impossible to escape. There are 11.3 million people living with the disease - equivalent to nearly 19 per cent of the population of the UK. Please help us remind the world that HIV has not gone away - it is a very real threat to the lives of millions in southern Africa every day. When HIV/AIDS first emerged, it took years for
the world to get to grips with the scale of the problem. Today, governments and international
institutions have stepped up their efforts to tackle the disease, and we have
seen some success. In South Africa, after the poor
leadership and denialism of previous administrations, there has been a real
effort to turn things around and face the challenge head on. Investment has meant that infection rates have lowered, and more people are able to access testing and treatment. We need leadership and commitment in the fight against HIV/AIDS, but these things mean nothing if they are not backed up with
funding
If
we don’t seriously invest now, we risk putting any progress that has been made
into reverse.
Please support ACTSA's campaign In Swaziland, the dire economic situation meant that drugs are scarce, and doctors are giving patients unsuitable medication which is less effective and sometimes be dangerous to them. Those who were getting a three months supply of
drugs now have to travel long distances to get one month’s supply.
Without more investment now, more
people will die from HIV/AIDS. ACTSA is
campaigning for leadership, commitment and funding to ensure effective action
on HIV/AIDS. We think that the
government should seriously invest in the Global Fund, and that it is
unacceptable that they have not yet stated how much they will provide.
