UN Women |
On 1 January 2011 the new United Nation’s women’s agency, ‘UN Women’ was born.
By providing international leadership on gender equality and running
programmes, UN Women could make a real difference for women in southern
Africa. However, it can only do this if it receives the funding it needs
from governments across the world.
ACTSA and other organisations have been calling for the UK Government to provide £21 million to this new agency, the same figure that they currently provide to UNICEF. Unfortunately, the Government has only committed £10 million annually for two years. This figure is a welcome start, yet much more is needed to ensure UN Women is a truly active force in women's development worldwide.
To give the new agency any
chance of even beginning to tackle gender inequality we need them to
match their words with actions and dig deep.

| Taking action on UN Women | In August 2011, ACTSA and its members called on the UK Minister for International Development, Andrew Mitchell, to re-affirm the Government's commitment to UN Women and to properly fund the new agency. ACTSA members e-mailed the Minister and outlined their worries for the new UN agency and the lack of funding it is currently receiving. The Minister responded to ACTSA and his response can be found here

Previous Actions In February 2011, ACTSA along with other organisations such as VSO's Godmothers, Womankind and One World Action held a Day of Action outside Westminster calling for MPs to support the new agency. The day was attended by celebrity and political speakers and included a video message from the head of UN Women, Michelle Bachelet.
