World Cup 2010: Football and Freedom

In 2010 South Africa hosted the FIFA World Cup, the largest international event on African soil ever.

ACTSA used the opportunity to tell the story of southern Africa, the region's achievements and the continuing challenges. There are lots of ways to get involved and learn about the World Cup and we have a range of information to help.

World Cup activity packs

ACTSA produced a range of packs for individuals, organisations and schools to help plan their World Cup activities in the summer of 2010. See the packs below:

  • Activities pack - contains ten simple things for communities, individuals and workplaces to do to promote southern Africa ranging from a sweepstake to celebrating Football Fridays.

  • Local Authorities pack - encouraged local authorities to promote and coordinate activities to celebrate the World Cup, reaffirm solidarity, celebrate diversity and tackle racism.

  • Football and freedom schools pack - created with the NUT the pack is designed for teachers to use children’s interest in football to explore South Africa’s history, culture and context.
